Friends of Lyndhurst: End of Summer Term 2017 Round Up

Before we all get lost in the haze that is the summer holidays, we wanted to take a moment to recap on our activity over this school year and more importantly, say a huge thanks to all of you – pupils, parents and carers, staff and governors – for your support. Thank you!

During this year we have held some fabulous events, allowing us to come together and celebrate our wonderful school and community:

Winter Fair ’16

Monster’s Ball & Punk Ball

Mulled wine bar at the Carol Concert

Quiz Night Playground cake sales

Camberwell Family Walk

Lyndstock Summer Fair ‘17

Pimms bar at the Playground Proms

Thank you to those who came up with ideas, to those who made them happen, to those who volunteered time and resources, and to all of you who came along on the day.

As well as giving us to a reason get together and have fun, a main aim of holding such events is to raise money to help enrich our children’s time at Lyndhurst. Other fundraising initiatives such as Easyfundraising (are you signed up yet?!) add to this. So hopefully you all had a great time crafting, dancing, walking, eating and shopping whilst we together raised £20,000 (gross) – which includes around £5,000 profit from the recent Summer Fair.  THANK YOU!

We strive to quickly put the money raised to good use supporting the school, and during this academic year we have given grants in excess of £11,660 to contribute to initiatives including:

Subsidising school trips
Residential year 6 trip
Science dome and workshops for Science Week
Playground equipment
Guided reading books for reluctant readers in KS1 and KS2
Chick-hatching in Reception
Inclusion Unit – River Room
Board games for Breakfast Club

Hopefully you will have heard direct from your child how much they enjoyed some of these things. Here too is some feedback from staff:

“Year 6 would like to thank the P.T.A for supporting their school journey.  They had the time of their lives and have made memories that they will never forget.”   “A big thanks for the funding to buy new playground equipment.  This benefits not just the children’s playtimes and encouraging exercise and shared play, but also supports the creation of new afterschool clubs in the next academic year.”

“New books bought for us has made a difference in that a set I bought for reluctant readers has elicited the response from a child who doesn’t like reading “I found a book I like!” This is quite a big step up from a quote from the same child at the beginning of the year – “I only like picture books with not much writing.”   “Most children’s report comments mentioned things like the Science Dome we had in the lower hall…”

Come September, there will be a welcome coffee morning early in the new term, followed by a spending meeting. In advance of the spending meeting we welcome ideas from everyone as to how our funds could next be spent.

If you have a suggestion, do download the spending form from the school website here (http://www.lyndhurstweb.com/lyndhurst-pta-fund-application-form/) and pass it to us via email or in person in advance of the meeting when each proposal will be discussed and voted on.

This year we also said goodbye and a huge thank you to one chair – Charlotte Wright – as we welcomed in a new – Richard Leeming – and come September we will be recruiting for two new positions: Co-Treasurer and Co-Secretary along with Class Reps for every class.  If you are interested in any of these positions, drop us an email (address below) as we’d love to hear from you.

We’re also very open to receiving suggestions as to how Friends of Lyndhurst could improve next year – are we scheduling meetings at convenient times? Making everyone feel welcome? Giving enough notice of events?  Holding interesting, relevant events? Do drop us an email with any feedback.

Thank you once again for contributing to a year of wonderful memories and great things achieved, and we wish you all a lovely Summer!
